Serviss chooses astronomy’s strangest sights rather than following a textbook sequence. Dark regions of the Milky Way, moving stars, eruptive events, zodiacal light, auroras, comets, meteorites, and the asteroid belt become starting points for explaining how observers reason from limited evidence.
Several mysteries in the book have since acquired better explanations, which makes it useful for comparing scientific eras. The reader can see both the durability of observation and the provisional character of interpretation.
